VPN Not Working in China? A Traveler's Recovery Checklist
Do not start by deleting the app or buying three replacements. First prove that the underlying internet works, then change one layer at a time: network, route, device and finally provider support.

The word 'VPN failure' describes several different problems. This table keeps the diagnosis narrow so one useful clue is not erased by five simultaneous changes.
| What you see | Likely layer | First action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing loads with the VPN off | Wi-Fi, carrier data or captive portal | Finish the hotel sign-in or switch to mobile data | Changing VPN servers before the base connection works |
| Local pages load; Gmail or Google does not | Route to the international service | Turn on the prepared access route and test the real app | Treating full signal bars as proof of global access |
| It works on mobile data but not hotel Wi-Fi | Hotel network path or incomplete Wi-Fi login | Complete the captive portal, then retry the supported route | Deleting the working mobile setup |
| It works on the phone but not the laptop | Laptop client, import, security policy or system proxy | Compare the laptop against its setup guide and ask IT if managed | Assuming phone success automatically covers the computer |
| The VPN says connected but the app still spins | Wrong route, stale app session or app-specific behavior | Test another supported route, then reopen the exact app | Using only a generic speed test as proof |
| Every prepared route fails on both connections | Provider route or account problem | Use the reachable support channel and preserve the working base connection | Reinstalling before saving credentials and offline instructions |
Step 1: prove the underlying internet works
Turn the VPN or access layer off temporarily and open a page that should be reachable on the local connection. If nothing loads, the problem is Wi-Fi, mobile signal, the carrier plan or a required hotel login—not the VPN route.
Hotels and airports often use captive portals. Apple explains that these networks may require a login, email address, payment or acceptance of terms before internet access starts. Join the network, finish that screen and only then test the access route.
- Check whether the device has actual internet, not only a Wi-Fi icon.
- Open the hotel login screen and accept its terms if required.
- If the base connection is dead, switch to mobile data or contact the hotel/carrier.
Step 2: change the underlying connection
If hotel Wi-Fi works locally but the prepared route does not connect, turn Wi-Fi off and retry over roaming or travel-eSIM data. If mobile data fails, try the hotel connection after completing its portal. One route can behave differently across two networks.
This single test is more useful than cycling through many servers: it separates a network-path problem from an account, device or provider problem. Keep whichever base connection works while you continue.
Step 3: refresh before reinstalling
Refresh the provider's subscription or route list, confirm the intended profile is selected and try the documented alternate route. Reopen the exact service you need after each change. A speed-test result does not prove that Gmail sign-in, WhatsApp calls or a work file will load.
Do not delete the app while it still contains the only working profile or credentials. Reinstallation can create a second problem if the download page, app store, verification email or sign-in service is unreachable from the current network.
Step 4: isolate a phone-only or laptop-only failure
If the same connection and account work on the phone but not the laptop, the mainland network is no longer the only suspect. Check whether the laptop imported the current subscription, whether its system proxy or VPN mode is active and whether company security controls block additional network software.
For a managed work computer, stop before disabling security software or changing corporate settings. Follow the employer's policy and contact IT. China Internet Pass does not replace a required company VPN or override device management.
If you landed with only one failing VPN
Use any independent connection you already have—home-carrier roaming or an overseas-routed travel eSIM—to recover access on the phone. Save the hotel address, transport details, support channel and any setup instructions offline before doing more invasive troubleshooting.
Buying another generic VPN after arrival can still leave you unable to reach its store listing, download, verification email or account page. The priority is restoring one reachable channel, not collecting more untested apps.
Prevent this before the flight
Install, sign in and save recovery material before departure. Test both phone and laptop, restart them once and repeat the test, because an app that works only until the first reboot is not a travel-ready setup.
- Carry two underlying connections where practical: hotel Wi-Fi plus roaming or a travel eSIM.
- Save subscription details, QR codes, setup instructions and support entry points offline.
- Keep a contact method that does not depend on Gmail or the failing app.
- Test the real inbox, call, file and laptop—not only the connection indicator.
Where China Internet Pass fits
China Internet Pass is a managed access and support layer over a working Wi-Fi or mobile connection. It provides pre-trip setup, stable primary and alternate routes for supported devices and 24/7 China-based connection assistance.
It cannot create cellular signal, repair a hotel outage or guarantee every website and corporate environment. Its recovery advantage is that the route, device instructions and human support are prepared as one travel system before the failure happens.
China VPN failure FAQ
Why does my VPN work on mobile data but not hotel Wi-Fi?
The two connections take different network paths, and hotel Wi-Fi may also require a captive-portal login. Complete the portal, then retry the supported route.
Why does the VPN say connected while Gmail still does not load?
A connected indicator does not prove that the selected route reaches every service. Try the documented alternate route and reopen the exact app or account flow you need.
Should I delete and reinstall the VPN app?
Not first. Save credentials and instructions, prove the base connection works, switch networks and refresh the route list. Reinstall only when the provider's instructions require it and the download path is reachable.
Will a travel eSIM fix a VPN failure?
An overseas-routed eSIM may restore global access on that phone and provides a second underlying network. It does not automatically repair hotel Wi-Fi or configure the laptop.
Can China Internet Pass help after I arrive?
Yes when you can still reach the account or support channel over a working connection. Setup is safer before departure because downloads, sign-in and recovery services may be harder to reach after arrival.
